My little rescue guy, Charlie, a poodle/shih-tzu mix (we think).
There's been a buzz in the last year or so around Gig Harbor about the real possibility of a dog park coming to the area.  I've attended some city meetings where its sounded like a reality, however I haven't really heard anything since January earlier this year... so I called up PenMet Parks this morning and had a pleasant chat with Terry lee, the Executive Director (of PenMet Parks).

Here are the highlights of my conversation, in bullet points for ease of review:

  • Pierce County granted its approval just last week for the use of an enclosed 20 acre area within the 97 acres being leased from the Peninsula School District (fyi: location is adjacent to Bujacich Rd., across from McCormick Forest Park).
  • Next step is to get a signature from the School District for approval which is anticipated early this week.
  • Then they will be obtaining 3 bids for the clearing and fencing to take place immediately after signatures are in place - plans to move forward with the lowest bid.
My other rescue pup, Lily, going for a car ride...
  • They will not have to build a parking lot, saving mucho dinero $$$, as the Fire District has allowed use of their lot adjacent to the entrance off Bujacich Rd.
  • Working budget is about $75K, leaving a remaining balance of $138K for future park options @ the Purdy Transfer Station and some additional property by the Narrows Airport.
  • Estimated timeline from now until completion: 1-2 months is all!
Rock on Gig Harbor doggies & owners!!  New spaces await you! :)
